Brutal, superstitious, and steeped in dread, this gothic historical horror-thriller locks creature legend, religious paranoia, class oppression, and pre-revolutionary decay into one coherent nightmare. The panel admired its assured tonal control, a damaged and slowly awakening protagonist, and a cinematic church-set climax staged with genuine weight.
