A grim, gritty drama built around an underdog whose world keeps closing in, this one landed as the kind of hard-edged realism the panel had been hoping to see. They found the story compelling enough to hold them right through, carried by strong characters and performances with real weight behind them. The assured direction and the film's stark, unvarnished look drew genuine admiration from them.
