From the Judges, on Sound of the Somme

Sound design and score carry this period piece, building an environment of real intensity alongside cinematography that finds both action and raw emotion in a palette of deep, dark colour. The panel found it emotionally resonant, moved by the way the horrors of war sit against the uplifting power of music, and by an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances told with sincerity and restraint. Direction and production values give this short the scale and confidence of something far larger.

Curated, anonymised highlights drawn from the judges' notes.
