ETOA: A Kokoda Track Story

Director's Statement

As a filmmaker, I’ve always loved the idea of shaping engaging human perspectives around a connecting theme or narrative thread. The legacy of the Kokoda campaign contributes an enormous amount to the DNA of current day Australia. As thousands make the pilgrimage each year to retrace the steps of those who came before, they are reminded of a chapter in time where the bravery and sacrifice of a select few, enabled the prosperity and future for so many others. While many films have told this chapter of story before, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share with audiences a new chapter in the legacy of the Kokoda legend - the lost battlefield of Etoa. Largely unknown in mainstream circles, the Etoa battlefield and it’s recovery signify an unclosed chapter of history for all involved. I wanted to explore the local history of the site, it’s transformation into a warzone, the subsequent recovery efforts and the aspirations for its future through the unique voices of Papua New Guinean, Australian and Japanese stakeholders. This story has a unique opportunity to showcase the reconciliation of once-warring nations through a shared commitment to honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
