Director's Statement

Beacon came from an image that popped into my head. A car driving down a pitch-black motorway at night. Streetlights illuminate as the car gets near, then flicker back out once the car passes. I eventually figured out that the lights were turning on because a girl inside the car was generating the power. Her body produced electricity just by being near electrical devices. I set out to make a film about the consequences of having this ability. Seeing this idea come to life has been incredibly rewarding. My favourite part of making Beacon was constantly being surrounded by people far more talented than me in their respective departments. I’ve learned so much by working with our superb crew. An extra special thanks goes out to my Producer Nadya, and our project supervisor Dean Law. Beacon is the biggest project I’ve led thus far. Yet I felt so supported by the crew at every step, that nothing felt like too great a challenge - which is saying a lot, since the script was ambitious for our student budget. Beacon means a lot to me. Its protagonist, Goose, starts off meek but comes into her own and ends up taking a path that nobody expected of her. The film explores the idea that certain people will always be persecuted for their usefulness, through no fault of their own. I hope this film is a powerful showcase for the creative talents of our cast and crew.
