Director's Statement

Jack Nielson, filmmaker portrait provided to AFIN.

'Tales of Finer Men' was my final film that I completed for my film school Diploma. I devoted myself to this film for about 6 months. The idea was sprung from a time in my life when I was listening to a lot of 50s and 60s music, and watching old gangster and noir films. I wanted to practice writing dialogue and had the idea of writing a short film that revolved around one conversation in one room, with 4 different characters. This film is incredibly important to me as it completely consumed my life for a period of time. I wrote it, produced it, directed it, edited it, all myself, as well as designing the set and costumes etc. My biggest goal was to create a story that incapsulated an audience with beautiful visuals, powerful performances and a believable world that was to be built within the film. With the help of my talented cinematographer (Alexander Free) and great friend, we were able to bring my vision to life and craft a series of images that have not only taught me so much, but are also able to compliment the story being told on screen.
