Caretaker

Director's Statement

This is a personal and reflective documentary about my mother, uncle, and grandparents. The story is of their generational caretaking experience as an immigrant family experiencing medical issues, and as their own gentle response to need. As family members decide to take on the role of caretaker, sometimes these roles can define their lives. Special trivia: This is a family story, told by my family. The entire cast and crew is Latinx. The composer is my cousin Victor Granados. My grandmother named my mother Rose 'because of her symbol of love' - and when La Rosa card is placed it is when my mom Rose speaks, asking not to be hit. The song you hear at the end, 'Las Mañanitas' (Little Mornings) is a traditional Mexican song we sing every birthday morning since childhood. All the Super8 footage was shot by my grandfather Carlos, who passed away while the film was in post production. Young Rose and Antonio are played by their niece and nephew of almost the same names- Rosario and Antonio. The woman who portrayed grandma Margarita (deceased) is her best friend and next door neighbor. Update: Uncle Tony still has not regained his vision but has heard this short film while my mom translated the visuals for him.
