Writer's Statement
At their core, Fiona Leonard’s stories reflect a fierce and heartfelt search for connection. They navigate uncomfortable journeys and explore the ways in which we must delve into the tangled margins of our lives - into the spaces where conditioning and institutionalised bias lies - if we are to find true joy. Her writing style is characterised by minimalist language that is nuanced and crisp. The words bounce, on and off the page. She leaves space both for interpretation and also for the reader and performer to move amidst the words as they find their own way and shape the story alongside their own lived experience. Her belief is that story is not tied to the page or the stage. Rather, the threads of story pull in all directions, offering scope for healing, understanding and expansion. Through story we are able to better interpret those who have come before us and better explore how we move forward.
