Synopsis

Search for Hawaiki follows the struggle of Fable as he integrates back into society after some time away in a psychiatric unit. Upon being entrusted to the guardianship of his younger sibling, Fable stumbles upon an ancient tide chart, setting out on a quest to find inner tranquillity, seek redemption, and re-establish a bond with his distant son, guided by the aroha and manaaki of his whānau.

Director's Statement

Fredrick Jozef Hoani Teteira Pokai, filmmaker portrait provided to AFIN.

Kia Ora, my name is Fredrick Pokai As a writer, actor, and director, I wish to tell stories that are engaging and compelling across multiple genres. Although I am Indigenous I focus on the art of the film through a Maori lens. My stories focus on the strange, unorthodox, and realities of those who live outside of the box of society while telling relatable narratives of the everyday person in the bizarre world of cinema.

What makes this one special

From the Judges

From the Judges

A tender family story that engages with mental health and the stigma surrounding it, this short earns its warmth through heartfelt storytelling and characters who feel genuinely lived-in. The panel responded to the performances across the adult cast, led by a wholly believable turn that carries real emotional weight, and to cinematic wide-shot framing that lends the film considerable production value. Costume and production design place these characters firmly in their world, and it left them wanting more.
