The Nine Lives

Writer's Statement

NINE LIVES was born from a collision of two very real experiences in my life. In 2019 - 2020, while deployed in Syria, I rescued a cat and brought him home with me. He became a small anchor in a world that often felt unstable. When I finally returned to the U.S. in early 2020, the world was sliding into lockdown - streets emptying, doors sealing, and, most painfully, pets being discarded as fear and misinformation spread. Watching that unfold, I couldn’t shake one question: What would I do if someone tried to take my cat from me? As a retired U.S. Army Special Forces medic, I’ve lived inside confined, high‑pressure environments where movement, breath, and timing determine survival. That experience shaped the film’s physical language - the tight hallways, the stairwell choke points, the improvised tactics, and the relentless forward momentum. The “near one‑shot” descent isn’t a stylistic flourish; it’s a way to trap the audience inside the same suffocating urgency the protagonist feels. At its core, Nine Lives is about a withdrawn veteran who has already lost everything except the one creature that still depends on him. When that last connection is taken, he doesn’t become a hero - he becomes a man with nothing left to lose, fighting through a collapsing system to save the only life he can still protect. The film blends grounded action with emotional clarity, using physical survival as a metaphor for psychological survival. This story is personal. It’s about resilience, about the small companions that keep us human, and about the lengths we go to when the world closes in. I wrote Nine Lives to be visceral, intimate, and unflinching - a descent that tests the body but reveals the heart.
