A Note from the Filmmakers
Growing up in Australia, there’s always been a lack of Asian representation in the mainstream media around me, let alone Asian-Australian representation. Recently with films and TV shows like The Farewell (2020) and Kim’s Convenience (2016-present), I have finally been able to relate to onscreen characters on a deeper and more personal level. Despite experiencing these new milestones of Asian Representation, it is important to point out that these are examples of Asian-American and Asian-Canadian representation. When it comes to Asian-Australian, there is still a distinct gap that leaves much to be desired. By telling my own story with my short film, A Meal To Share, I aim to contribute in filling the gap of Asian-Australian Representation and help pave the way for a more diverse future.

Assured, unfussy cinematography and clean cutting give this two hander room to breathe, and the film moves with a rhythm that lets a father and son story land without hurry. There's an authenticity in the performances that reads as lived rather than staged, and the cross cultural push and pull at its heart is drawn with real feeling. What stayed with the panel was the warmth underneath it all: the value of family and friends, and the quiet power of forgiveness.

G'day! My name is Leo and I'm a second-generation Chinese-Australian filmmaker that recently finished my time and Deakin University studying my Honours of Film and Television.
