Director's Statement
As the director of "La Telaraña," I sought to create a compelling and nuanced exploration of the brotherhood dynamic caught up in the high-stakes world of narcotics. The film follows the story of the three Alvarez brothers who attempt to run a drug cartel while being relentlessly hunted by the DEA. The youngest brother, Davíd, is the focus of the film as he struggles with the balance between his loyalty to his brothers and his role as a DEA informant, ultimately being forced to make a decision that could jeopardize everything he holds dear. At its core, "La Telaraña" is a story about greed and ambition - the lengths that individuals will go to to protect their interests, even at the expense of those closest to them. Despite their shared blood and familial bonds, the brothers are forced to navigate a treacherous world where trust is a luxury and betrayal is always lurking around the corner. Through the film's portrayal of the brothers' struggles, I aimed to explore the more morally corrosive effects of greed and ambition. Who will go the furthest? I worked closely with my Director of Photography, Jordan Martin, to create a visual language that reflects the film's themes and paints their world in a gritty and raw perspective. Through the use of carefully composed and juxtaposed images, we were able to convey a sense of tension and urgency that draws the viewer into the world of the film. I felt this project had to come from an authentic place to honor these characters, and I must say I had a great team helping make that happen. I am extremely grateful for the incredible cast/crew I had that taught me so many valuable lessons and helped me make something I’m proud of.
