Director's Statement

Like many who first encounter Ambrose Bierce’s "The Damned Thing," I was immediately engrossed by this largely forgotten landmark in horror fiction. Foreshadowing the rise of cosmic horror, Bierce’s story follows everyday people as they encounter an extraordinary phenomenon that defies rational explanation. What drew me to this story wasn't just the mystery of the creature; what was it? Where did it come from? Why was it invisible? It was its untraditional narrative structure. The story unfolds almost like a modern investigative crime drama. Yet what lingered with me most was the men's reaction to this entity. At its core, this film is a critique of human hubris: our futile attempt to control an uncontrollable, indifferent universe. Bringing a story over 133 years old to the screen was an immense logistical and creative challenge. The script demanded ambitious visual and special effects, period-specific production design, unique locations, animals, stunts, and weaponry. Rather than shying away from this scale, we leaned into it, and I'm proud of the work accomplished through dedicated partnerships with the Georgia Film Academy and the University of Georgia, with a passionate crew that blended college students with local professionals. My hope is that audiences are affected by the film in the same way I was when I first read Bierce's tale. I want them to be intrigued and frightened, but more importantly, I want them to leave the theater with a lingering sense of uncertainty, questioning their own existence and our fragile place within it.
