Director's Statement

The Hoist offers a genuine slice of Australian culture, hilariously based on a true story. It follows Bill on his mission, along with Shaz, Gazza, and Phil as they attempt to pull off the ‘perfect’ country dance at their local community hall. At the heart of our film is the spirit of the Australian bush community. The story unfolds at a classic Aussie bush dance, an annual celebration of togetherness, music, and, of course, the most important part - the supper. But when a mad inventor creates a contraption to save the food, the dance takes a hilarious and heartwarming turn that no one expects. This film is a love letter to the colourful tapestry of rural life, capturing a community rallying together for old-fashioned toe-tapping good times. It’s not just about saving the food; it’s about the bonds we share, the laughter we create, and the rhythm of life that keeps us all moving, even when things don’t go as planned. The Hoist is proud to have a female-dominant crew, with myself (Director), Emma Morgan (Writer and Production Designer), and Miranda Porter (Cinematographer), Eve Donohue (Producer) alongside Esther De Schone (Art Director), Laura Williams (Costume Designer), Melissa Christie (Makeup Designer), and many other talented women in supporting roles. We've infused the film with a unique perspective, bringing to life a story about these distinct characters, their laconic, nuanced relationships, and the quirky charm of the bush. Every frame bursts with the energy of our collective passion - from the vibrant costumes and lively dances to the unexpected twist in the plot. We hope this film leaves audiences not only with a smile but also with a deeper appreciation for the rich, humorous, and resilient spirit that defines the Aussie bush community.
