Director's Statement

My grandma raised me in a small village in the Bulgarian mountains. The air was clean, the weather was merciful, and the people - kind. But they were all getting older with every visit. And even as I travelled across continents in search of stories, my thoughts always returned to my grandmother - and to the silence of her days. When I discovered Yavor Tsanev’s short story “God’s Will”, I realized the perfect narrative had been waiting for me in the mountains for all these years. What started as a vision of a lit candle that suddenly starts trembling, as if it will go out at any moment, became a testimony of my own conflicting interpretations of faith and isolation, of my love for the rural, and the tragedy of dying villages. In the making of this film, I wanted to preserve the stillness of an elder woman’s world - a place where little seems to happen, and yet everything does. A world where nothing moves except God.
