Synopsis
A day in the life of Horace, an outback isolationist who holds within him a dark and violent secret.
Director's Statement
In A Place Like This is a labour of love, fuelled by homegrown talent and a passion for the craft of storytelling. The film reimagines the slasher subgenre within the distinctly haunting yet strikingly beautiful landscapes of Australia. By setting the horror in our own backyard, we aim to juxtapose the brutality of the story against the natural splendor of the setting, creating a uniquely visceral experience. Inspired by classics like Friday the 13th, Taxi Driver, Wolf Creek, American Psycho, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the vision was born from a simple question: What kind of character emerges when we combine Jason Voorhees’ relentless drive with Travis Bickle’s introspection and fractured psyche? …Come find out.

From the Judges
A slasher set in the Australian bush, this short drew admiration for the way it reworks a familiar genre and for the polish of its craft. The editing, the colour work, and the practical wound and blood effects all landed strongly with the panel, as did cinematography that lets the natural landscape carry real atmosphere, and a title sequence whose camera movement pulled them straight into the story. The score sits neatly with the visuals, and the campfire song stayed with them as a memorable moment.
